How to Wash Activewear So It Actually Lasts

Fabric softener kills spandex. Hot dryers destroy recovery. Here's the full care protocol that keeps compression, color, and shape intact for years — not months.

The reason most activewear "stops fitting right" after six months isn't the fabric. It's the laundry routine. Elastane (spandex) is chemically fragile — heat, fabric softener, and harsh detergents degrade it much faster than the nylon or polyester it's blended with.

Before you wash

  • Turn everything inside out. Protects the outer face from pilling and preserves color.
  • Close all zips and hooks. Metal on fabric equals pulls and snags.
  • Wash within 24 hours of a sweaty session. Sweat and body oils feed odor-causing bacteria that get harder to remove over time.
  • Never leave activewear balled up in a gym bag overnight. Air it out first.

    • The wash cycle

    Temperature: cold, always. Cold water preserves spandex, prevents color bleed, and cleans activewear just as effectively as warm for normal use. Reserve warm for medical-grade sanitizing needs only.

    Cycle: gentle or delicate. Aggressive agitation breaks down elastane fibers.

    Detergent: a small amount of liquid, sport-specific if possible. Powder detergents don't fully dissolve in cold water and leave residue that traps odor. Sport detergents (Nathan Sport-Wash, WIN, Hex Performance) are formulated to break down synthetic sweat.

    Load size: don't over-pack. Activewear needs room to move for detergent to reach every seam.

    Wash bags: yes. A mesh delicates bag protects sports bra hooks and prevents leggings from tangling with heavier items.

    The rules you cannot break

  • No fabric softener. Ever. It coats elastane fibers, kills wicking performance, and permanently degrades recovery. This is the single biggest killer of activewear.
  • No bleach. Discolors technical fabrics and destroys elastane.
  • No dryer sheets. Same coating problem as softener.
  • Don't wash with towels. Towels shed lint that clings to compression fabric.

    • Drying

    Line dry or lay flat. This is the second biggest lifespan factor. Heat destroys spandex — a hot dryer will kill compression in 20–30 washes.

    If you must use a dryer: tumble low, remove while slightly damp. Even one hot cycle noticeably degrades recovery.

    Never wring wet activewear. Press between two towels to remove excess water instead.

    Removing odor that won't come out

    If your favorite sports bra smells like the gym even after washing:

    1. Soak for 30 minutes in a bath of cold water and 1 cup white distilled vinegar.

    2. Rinse thoroughly.

    3. Wash on cold gentle with your normal detergent.

    Repeat once if needed. Vinegar breaks down the bacteria colonies that regular detergent misses.

    Storage

  • Fold, don't hang. Hanging stretches shoulder straps and waistbands over time.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight. UV degrades elastane and fades color.
